Torquay is only 45 minutes from Avalon airport and 1.5 hours from Tullamarine Airport. The city of Melbourne is 1.5 hours by car or train if you want to get some culture.
Beaches in the area: Bells and Winki are an 8 minute drive Bird Rock and Jan Juc beaches are 5 minutes drive or a 10 minutes walk. Right at the start of the Great Ocean Road. Take the 2 hour road trip along the coast to Johanna and the Twelve Apostles and then cut inland through the Otways on the way home. About 15 minutes drive in the other direction to world class beach breaks at 13th Beach.
